New Border Crossing Identification Cards For American Citizens |
The State and National Security Departments started issuing a new border crossing card id for American citizens.
These driver license sized cards will be required as an alternative for the passport starting June 2009 in land or sea border crossings between the U.S., Mexico and Canada as well as in the Caribbean and Bermuda regions. The authorities pointed out that these will not be valid for international air travel.
According to the National Security Department website, the cards will contain an electronic chip that will allow border agents’ access to photographs and biographic information stored in the U.S. government’s database before a traveler gets to the check point, thus making inspections faster.
Since the State Department started accepting requests for this card back in February, there have been more than 350 thousand requests, according to a joined bulleting release from the State and National Security Departments.
They say that over 7,600 cards have already been sent and that is expected to fulfill all orders by September 2008.
Once initial distribution is over, the time for card processing will be around 4 weeks the same as for a passport process.
Cards cost 45 dollars for adults and 35 for children under 16 years old. For those who already have a passport the cost will be of just 20 dollars.
