BAJA CALIFORNIA IS THE BEST "YEAR ROUND"
CATCH SOUTH OF THE BORDER
SPORTFISHING IN ENSENADA, B.C.
Sorrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the warm waters of the Sea Of Cortes, with hundreds of unspoiled sea shore miles, the peninsula offers a wide range game opportunities for the sport fishing fan. Whether it’s surface or deep surface fishing, you can enjoy the great sensation of catching a tuna, barracuda, dorado or rockfish.
ENSENADA
In the 1950s, there were a number of prosperous sportfishing fleets of party boats operating in Ensenada that used to tie up at an old complex of docks built around what is now the city’s downtown fish market (Mercado Negro). Ensenada was Mexico’s main Pacific coast commercial fishing center for the past 70 years, but it’s surprising how much good sport fishing is still available in the area.
Ensenada fishing days of the 1950s, when the town billed itself as the “Yellowtail Capital of the World”, are long gone, but nevertheless, the outer waters surrounding the city’s wonderful Bahía de Todos Santos still provide excellent year-round bottom fishing during the cooler months for lingcod and all kinds of rockfish, very good kelp bed fishing for barracuda, bonito, calico bass. In winter, boats stay close to home and drop bait and iron jigs for abundant rockcod, sheephead, ocean whitefish, occasional runs of halibut and white seabass are also encountered from about April through the end of September. Bottom fishing spots include the shore just north of town, around the Islas Todos Santos, and around Punta Banda.
During Summer and Autumn, Ensenada boats can add surface action,
yellowtail, bonita, calico bass, and barracuda to the near shore
catch, or they can run offshore for early shots at albacore, yellowfin
tuna, big eye tuna, bluefin tuna, dorado and marlin. Sometimes at
Ensenada, the offshore fish come in practically to the rocks, as
happened few years ago, when boats as close as two miles off Punta
Banda scored on three species of tuna, yellowtail, and dorado all on
the same day.
Other good places where sport fishing is one of the main reason to take
the journey are: Puerto Santo Tomas at La Bocana, just about 25 miles
south of Ensenada, Ejido Eréndira located 15 miles south of Puerto
Santo Tomás, San Quintin is almost always good for something, just a 3
hrs. driving from Ensenada.
If you ask me where is my favorite place for sport fishing,
definitively is Bahia de los Angeles. L.A. Bay was first paved side
road back in 1976, and you would think that development would have
happened very quickly after that. But nope, for a variety of reasons,
this breathtakingly beautiful bay seems like a relic of Baja's early
days, preserved in some kind of time warp.
Fishing at Bahia de los Angeles has become one of yellowtail spots in
Ensenadas county, and there were so many yellowtail here anyway, you
can still catch them up to about 45 pounds when things are right in the
spring, summer, and fall. The rest of the time, there's decent bottom
fishing (between wind storms).
In a few words… the community of Ensenada are people that were instill
to the love and respect for the ocean and inland waters, anglers can
take you to those outstanding and magical places that you can find
along the 692 miles of sandy – rocky coasts that surround Ensenada´s
county. Join to the quality of restaurants, hotels and warmth of
its people, the port of Ensenada still the Baja California’s best "Year
Round" catch south of the border.
